Honorary Coach

I like the new honorary coach initiative. So far this season it's been Dave Eaton (Academic Dean and avid Racer photographer), Dave Gessler (Murray State Faculty Athletic Representative), Jerry Penner (MCCH CEO) and Marty Futrell (Super Fan). I really hope 75Fan gets to be an honorary coach. I can't think of anyone more deserving.
I would also like to suggest adding RacerHistory and Smidge34 to the list, provided that Smidge can behave himself.

Well I had the privilege of being the Honorary Coach at the Belmont game last night. What an experience! One of the highlights of my time here at Murray State. Why me? No clue, except I've been a faculty member at MSU since 1996 and have been an avid supporter of Racer Athletics during that time and am retiring in May. I think it was the departments way of saying "thank you". It's a little sad, but honestly the percentage of faculty members who buy season tickets to multiple sports, attend multiple sports events and contribute to the Racer Club is pretty low. Hopefully that will change.
The experience itself was really fun and interesting. The Honorary Coach goes on the court with the team about a half an hour before game time. Then I had a chance to go into the locker room for the pregame talk. Really fascinating. Prohm goes over, in detail, all aspects of the game plan. Then it was interesting to see the players (and coaches) go through their pregame rituals. For all former athletes, like me, you know what I mean. I just tried to be a fly on the wall and leave everybody alone. Didn't take a single picture either. Then you go back on the court, get introduced with the players during the pregame. After that I headed back to my seat and watched the game like I usually do.
I was really relieved that we won and that Coach Prohm kept his perfect home record against Belmont intact. As an Honorary Coach, I get no credit for the win. Had we lost, I would never hear the end of it!

Could I have addressed the team, this would have been my speech (apologies to Kurt Russell):
"Great moments are born from great opportunity, and that's what you have here tonight, Racers. That's what you've earned here tonight. One game; if we played them ten times, they might win five. But not this game, not tonight. Tonight, we play with them. Tonight we stay with them, and we shut them down because we can. Tonight, we are the greatest basketball team in the MVC.
You were born to be Murray State Basketball players—every one of you, and you were meant to be here tonight. This is your time. Their time is done. It's over. I'm sick and tired of hearing about what a great basketball team Belmont has. Screw 'em. This is your time. Now go out there and take it!"

It's come to my attention that we have one honorary coach at all home games this season as well as one ornery coach. But I digress.
