Men's Basketball / KING OF THE VALLEY
November 10, 2022, 08:55:10 AM
I thought I'd start a thread to keep up with the changes in the composite rankings of Valley teams according to Massey, Pomeroy and Sagarin.

Today's post is as of games played through 9 NOV 2022.

1.      86    Drake
2.    105    Southern Illinois
3.    114    Missouri State
4.    115    Bradley Braves
5.    117    Belmont
6.    119    Northern Iowa
7.    140    Murray State
8.    142    Indiana State

9.    199    Valparaiso
10.  236    Illinois State
11.  245    Evansville
12.  257    Illinois-Chicago

Check out the parity early in the season!

#2-#6 : 5 Teams within 14 places of each other!  #2-#8 : 7 teams within 37 places of each other

It will be interesting to see what Evansville does in the coming weeks as they certainly turned some heads winning on the road at Miami, Ohio.

Illinois State struggled with turnovers in the last possessions of their game and should have won.  It was a bad loss and dropped them significantly across all ranking systems.

Women's Basketball / Racers beat Bethel 71-36
November 02, 2022, 08:27:08 AM
The Racers looked pretty good at times.

Young picked up where she left off last season and had 25 points.

Turley added 15 of her her own.

I really liked what I saw out of Horvath and McKay.

They really push the tempo and did a good job of rebounding.

They will be fun to watch this season.

https://www.ncaa.org/news/2022/8/3/media-center-di-board-of-directors-adopts-student-athlete-benefit-legislation.aspx

QuoteSchools now are empowered to support student-athletes in a variety of ways without asking for waivers, including providing support needed for a student-athlete's personal health, safety and well-being; paying for items to support a student's academic pursuits; purchasing insurance of various types (including loss-of-value and critical injury); and funding participation in elite-level training, tryouts and competition. The benefits proposal is effective immediately.

https://www.ncaa.org/news/2022/8/31/media-center-division-i-board-of-directors-modernizes-infractions-process.aspx

3 Changes.....

1). Peer Review

QuoteChanges to the process include:

More clearly defined violation charging standards for enforcement staff.
Clarification about the role of school leadership in an investigation.
A new standard for head coach responsibility requirements.
The creation of a public-facing dashboard of existing infractions cases.

Changes will take effect Jan. 1, 2023.

2). Appeals Process
QuoteChanges will include:

Limiting appeals of penalties to only those that fall outside legislated penalty guidelines.
Overturning Committee on Infractions decisions only when an appealing party demonstrates that no reasonable person could have made that decision.
Resolving the majority of appealed cases through a written record rather than conducting oral arguments.
As with the peer-review proposal, prohibiting extensions to timelines except in extreme and clearly defined circumstances.
Removing the automatic stay for appealed penalties.
Authorizing the Infractions Appeals Committee to issue summary affirmations of COI decisions without further comment.

The changes are effective Jan. 1, 2023.

3). Eliminating the IARP
QuoteThe board in January placed a temporary moratorium on accepting additional cases into the IARP, at the request of the Independent Accountability Oversight Committee and the Infractions Process Committee. The number of cases referred to the independent process was greater than initially anticipated, which has prolonged case timelines and required significant resources to bring those cases to resolution.

https://www.ncaa.org/news/2022/8/31/media-center-division-i-board-adopts-changes-to-transfer-rules.aspx

QuoteNCAA rules now will require any school that considers athletics when awarding scholarships to transfer student-athletes to provide that scholarship for the rest of a student's five-year eligibility or until they complete the requirements for their bachelor's degree, unless the student transfers again or engages in professional athletics opportunities.
