Men's Basketball / Multiple Broadcasts
April 05, 2015, 02:18:38 PM
Did anyone listen to the home streams last night?  I thought is was a great idea and loads of fun being able to flip from the network announcers to the home UK and Badger streams.  Quite entertaining- everybody thought the refs were unfair.  Not sure if they have done this every year, but I hope they do the same for the finals.

Men's Basketball / Belmont UVA

Torn on this.  Really upset with losing to this non-football school in their hometown and would like to see them get spanked.  But it's good for the OVC if they win.  That being said, this seems to be a terrible match-up for them.  I could see the Bruins doing well against many higher seeded teams.  But not this one.

Men's Basketball / Dayton Hotels
March 14, 2015, 05:42:15 PM
Checked for rooms today.  It seems most of the hotels are already sold out.  If we play there, I'll probably stay in a hotel 20-25 miles away.  Any members of Racer Nation who might go if we play there ought to start looking at hotel options.  They are limited.

Men's Basketball / NIT Bid Perspective
March 13, 2015, 05:55:28 PM
Last season, we wanted an NIT bid and were disappointed that we did not receive one.  The previous year, we also wanted an NIT bid and were angry that we did not receive one.  This year we have one, but...
It is an honor to be invited to the NIT.  An honor we were denied the part two years.  I really hope we get an NCAA bid,  but if we don't, I hope the team and Racer Nation will still consider an NIT bid special.  The team can't be lulled into considering an NIT bid a booby prize.  It's an honor.  If we play in the NIT, we need to win it all.  It would be great to someday see an NIT Championship banner hanging in the Bank.

As a Utah State alumni, I can promise you that Utah State fans are still fuming about the snubbing we received from the selection committee almost a dozen years ago (see http://www.deseretnews.com/article/595049143/Utah-State-snubbed-on-heels-of-loss-in-conference-tournament.html?pg=all).  Rarely does a team ranked before it's conference tournament not get a bid.

It's really intriguing that the Utah State AD (Scott Barnes) is chairing this years NCAA selection committee.  Although he did not start his position in Logan until after the snubbing (2008), I can assure you he's has been reminded of the snub his entire time there.  Although there are clearly differences in the situation with the Aggies and with the Racers, my thoughts are that he will at least listen to and be sympathetic towards our current position.

Utah State has been in the same position the Racers are now, and could very well be there again.  I'm not sure it will matter much, but my hope is that he will at least be willing to think about factors other than the traditional numbers, and view the situation from the perspective of a member of a "lesser" conference.  We'll see.  A really long shot, but still a shot.

Men's Basketball / Racer Gathering
March 06, 2015, 10:34:06 AM
Is there a Racer gathering scheduled this weekend?  Carter usually scheduled one for downtown Saturday, but I hadn't read anything about one this year.  Anybody know?  We'll probably hit Rock Bottom before the tip off tonight.

Men's Basketball / My first OVC tournament
March 01, 2015, 07:01:12 PM
was in 1997 versus Austin Peay.  We split the regular season games and met in the finals.  I just reviewed Racer History (great site!) to refresh my memory on details.  I remember the game went to OT and everybody fouled out.  Yet only Rainey, Mayes and Hamilton (I can't remember him) fouled out.  Anyway, Rainey and Mayes were two of our best players and Towsend had four fouls.  The bench players, like Matt Harris and Aaron Page had to step up and play above their heads.  And they did.  I still remember sitting in the stands watching those two and hoping beyond hope they could pull out the game.
That year was my introduction to Racer basketball in the OVC tournament.  I've seen many exciting games in the tournament since then (the shot by Reese) but that game remains my favorite.  It was a great introduction to The tradition of Racer basketball.
Anyone else want to tell about their first OVC tournament experience?

Men's Basketball / A Perfect Night
February 27, 2015, 10:13:09 AM
I spent the morning trying to think of a better night I've had at the CFSB Center.  I can't.  Senior nights are always special, and having all the parents, other family members and former coaches accompany the players made it quite emotional.  There was a good crowd, the game was exciting, a row of NBA scouts were there, all of the seniors had a chance to walk off the court to an appreciative Racer nation, and we won the game.  What this group has accomplished is remarkable even for the high standards set by the Murray State tradition.  Last night they tied the record for most consecutive wins in a season, and Coach Prohm became the fastest coach in school history to reach 100 wins.  What are the odds that both records would line up on the same night?  The post game ceremony was phenomenal, with moving senior video and Coach Prohm's heartfelt tribute to this great group of seniors.
I've been attending Racer games for about twenty years, and hopefully will attend games for at least another twenty.  But I doubt I will ever again experience a night at the CFSB Center like last night, which in so many ways represented everything I love about college basketball and being a supporter of the Murray State Racers.  Last night was a perfect night.

Men's Basketball / Court Storming
February 25, 2015, 06:37:38 AM
Court storming seems to be a hot topic after KSU did it Monday night (lots of articles, one at http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/12373038/chaotic-court-storming-mars-kansas-state-wildcats-win-kansas-jayhawks).
I don't recall ever seeing this at an OVC game.  Has it happened?

General Sports Discussions / Freshman Eligibility

This would really be interesting.  I'd love it if the NCAA had the fortitude to do it, although it would cost Calipari his job.  http://m.espn.go.com/extra/ncaa/story?storyId=12349646&src=desktop

Men's Basketball / Murray State NBA draft picks
February 19, 2015, 07:30:59 AM
I don't know how many of you saw the Murray State News article last week about Racers who were drafted into the NBA.  The link to the story is at http://thenews.org/2015/02/13/racer-win-streak-draws-attention-of-nba-scouts/
I was rather stunned after reading it to realize that 21 Racers were drafted into the NBA, and I've only seen one of them play.  We got here at the start of the 1996 season, so we missed Marcus Brown, but we've seen a lot of really good players, and some (like James Singleton) who had an NBA career.  I didn't realize that Canaan is the only Racer to be drafted since 1996.  Hopefully this team can add more than one name to the list.

Men's Basketball / Roadblock
February 08, 2015, 05:01:32 PM
We got stopped at a roadblock last night after the APSU game.  The KY State Police set it up about one mile into Kentucky on route 121 North.  There is absolutely nothing there, and a very strange place for a sobriety check, except....the Eggners Ferry bridge was down to one lane, so some Racer fans returned to Murray via route 121.   While I am 100% behind taking impaired drivers off the road, it bothers me to think  that someone might have such a low opinion of Racer fans that they thought this was necessary.

Men's Basketball / Nashville OVC Hotels
January 28, 2015, 04:20:04 PM
I tried to book a room at the Double Tree in Nashville for the OVC tournament today.  Room rates were over $300 per night.  Similar rates popped up for the other downtown Nashville hotels.  Anyone know of any deals?

Men's Basketball / Billy Kennedy
January 10, 2015, 07:35:15 PM
Outcoached a team that had superior talent in a double OT loss.  Great job.  Too bad it was an L, but it clearly shows this ex-Racer coach, despite his health setbacks, was a good hire. It would have been sweet if he could have pulled off the upset.

Football / Walter Powell v the Broncos
October 13, 2014, 01:07:48 PM
Walter Powell gained 171 yards in a Jets loss yesterday against my beloved Broncos, 153 on KO returns and 18 on punts.  He did fumble one punt resulting in a turnover, but overall played a solid game against very good coverage.  It was fun to watch him.

Don't know if anyone on the board is following our women's soccer team, but this is a really good group and fun to watch.  Hope they keep the winning streak alive on the road trip this weekend.

Football / Racers on NFL Rosters
September 02, 2014, 10:34:29 AM
Just curious if any Racers are still on NFL rosters.  I saw the Cardinals cut Walter Powell, but he was picked up by the Jets (http://www.newyorkjets.com/news/article-randylangeblogfb/Jets-Acquire-WR-Walter-Powell-on-Waivers/d6f727af-4c79-47a9-a720-227606b1313e) and the Austen lane was released by the Bears Saturday (http://mmqb.si.com/2014/09/01/andre-williams-zach-line-austen-lane-nfl-cutdown-day-2014/).  Anybody else left?  I don't know if Dontel Watkins or Roderick Tomlin tried again this season.
