Cowart had knee surgery over the summer. He has fully recovered from the surgery.

The current issue is, he hurt his foot in Fla then aggravated the injury in Evansville. He has also had some swelling in the knee so they are wanting there to be no swelling and the foot to be without pain and swelling before he returns. The knee is fine now, just waiting on the foot. Right now he is literally day-to-day.

I may be wrong, but I believe he could get a redshirt if he doesn't play anymore. From the movement that he has shown so far this year, he is clearly limited. Not only that, but with four big men already playing well, it is clear that next year, when he has time to get healthy and in shape, it would serve both his own, and the team's best interest. So far, he has clearly been playing injured.

The injury must be season ending is the issue I think and he played through it awhile right? I do believe he has kept the number of games played to exactly the maximum and he hasn’t played in 2020. With that said I would be very surprised if the staff were to seek a medical redshirt.

With what we have coming in, i don't see him getting a redshirt of any kind. It's an unfortunate for his senior year but it happens and life will go on.

I went to NCAA.org and verified, I thought that bridge had done been crossed but...

OK, yes, technically he hasn't played in more than (30% of scheduled games) 10 games still and the half-way point is game 16 (Saturday) but he also must not be medically able to compete for the remainder of the scheduled season.

The NCAA requires:
Contemporaneous medical documentation that establishes inability to compete for remainder of playing season.

That won't be the case.

Sure, a player can crawl on the floor, or jog down the court, but if he is unable to play at a near normal level, I believe that medical judgement enters the picture. I don't know the extent of his injuries, but he is not in street clothes every game just because he likes the view from the bench.

As soon as a player steps foot on the floor, even for just one play, it means that either he has been medically cleared by a treating physician to play or is going against medical advice. And any smart coach (unlike how Steve Kerr did with Durant in the finals last year) would not dare put a players future on the line like that.

Two medical redshirts for the 2019-2020 season.

Cowart and Whitley. Mark it down.

I've been on the side of thinking that we can take or leave Cowart, but then somebody brought up a good point that he is an all conference caliber player. The problem I have is the few games he played in this year I thought he was more or a liability. To have a great senior season he needed to shed about 20-30 pounds to enhance his quick moves, but it looks like he's coming in heavier than he was last year. I know with his knee injury it really limited his mobility, but if he could have time to rehab and come in next season in good shape then I'm all for the redshirt. If not, then I'm fine wishing him well in his future endeavors.
