Let's refresh our memories here... What exactly is a "preferred" walk on?

What is there to gain if you don't use a scollyship that you have as MM sounds like we may not use our last one.

I've never heard of a preferred walk on spot. God bless him. I wish him the best. I hope we see a lot of him...in games where we are ahead by 20+ points.

We had a scholarship we didn't use for this past season. Will we really go two straight seasons without using our full allottment of scholarships? I thought we were still looking at players for this upcming season. Did CMM really say we might not use that last scholarship?

What is there to lose if you sign a player for the sake of signing one is a much better question.

I poked around the net trying to find out something about young Hopewell. Didnt find out which if any schools were interested in him.
He was all sectional at Apollo High (in Owensboro I think) for what its worth..
Anyone know anything else?

"Preferred walk-on" just means that the guy was invited to be part of the team, albeit w/o a scholarship. In theory a preferred walk-on can get a scholarship later on if the coaches feel they are worthy, although in practice this rarely happens. Usually these players get very little playing time.

I think Jeff Martin Jr. was the last "preferred walk-on". He left after his sophomore year; his HS coach got a job as a head coach at a D3 school in Texas and Jeff Jr. went there. Probably a good decision for him, as it was a level he could play & start in, rather than sitting on the bench for another couple years looking at his dad's banner.

As far as last scholarship, if the right player doesn't come along, I don't mind keeping it. We could use it for a mid-season transfer situation, like we've done in the past with TJ Sapp & Demarcus Croaker. I'd rather do that and maybe end up with a useful player then give it to a freshman whose not ready for D1 that we're just going to chase off after a year.

I am surmising that there are a lot of devils in those little details. I am sure CMM has some potential irons in the fire and would like to keep those opportunities available should an opportunity present itself.

At the rate that players are transferring and coaches and conferences are changing, may not be a bad idea to keep one slot open in the event that a star happens to fall out of the sky.

I'm still surprised another player hasn't left. Hopefully we keep everyone, but we're not clear yet. I think the way CMM works, if he finds someone he likes then he'll show a current player the door. The whole keeping a scholarship open is like trying to save a timeout to take to the locker room.

There's at least one more I can't see making the roster for next season, but not sure how we are sitting APR-wise right now since we don't know the academic standing of the departing players.

It's really not. Mid season transfers happen. And if you don't have a scholarship, you can't take them.

Thanks window. I wondered why Martin left.
