I don’t want to be a naysayer on this thread since I agree that if anyone should have his jersey retired it is Ja, but still I have two questions I‘m sure of the answers on retiring Murray State Jerseys.
1. Who makes the decisions about this at MSU?
2. Do we have criteria and if so are they published anywhere?

Anybody know? Thanks in advance if you do.
That’s a terrific question. My gut feeling is it is up to whoever is AD and he/she makes final determination end of the day.

What team had the entire starting five retired?

Hyperbole but not too far off. It’s history now and done. I’m not trying to dog on any of them, they were all great players for us.

Edit: here is my little gripe if you look at the bar that was set there, then we have several more to retire to be consistent.

Again, this isn't about Ja. I'm sure everyone agrees that his number would be retired at some point, as it should be.

As far as who determines a retired number, I'm pretty sure that has changed over time. And there are stories, some told and some untold, related to these numbers.

Some of the old-timers may remember when Bennie Purcell's number was retired and "accidentally" unretired. Bennie's No. 21 was officially retired by the university in the 1950s and stayed that way through the 1960s, when he served as assistant coach for many of those years. Then when Ron Greene was named coach, suddenly 21 was in circulation again. Glen Green wore No. 21. Doug Gold wore No. 21.

Apparently, Bennie was too modest to say anything for years until finally what had to be a slow burn came to the surface, as he allegedly said to someone as he watched a Racer wearing "his" 21 on the floor, "It doesn't mean much to have your number retired around here."

That comment finally got to the right people and suddenly, no more 21s for Racer men's basketball. To make sure no more retired numbers were forgotten, they were put up in the rafters for all to see.

Why some numbers get retired and some don't apparently isn't about pure statistics, which could explain some omissions or some "head scratchers."

Wow 1985 I had never heard that story. Btw absolutely spot on, this discussion isn’t about Ja. That was easiest, no brainer decision to make in our history.

At some point, someone will come to the conclusion that numbers are going to run out over time.

Here are the total possible number combinations in today's college game.....

 0 1 2 3 4 5
00 01 02 03 04 05
10 11 12 13 14 15
20 21 22 23 24 25
30 31 32 33 34 35
40 41 42 43 44 45
50 51 52 53 54 55

Things being the way they are now, only 42 players can have their "number" officially "retired."

Murray State has been blessed enough to have been able to retire 10 Jersey numbers since 1952.

Bennie Purcell ( 1949-1952 ) was the 1st RACER to have his Jersey retired ( 1952 ) and
Ja Morant ( 2017-2019 ) will become the 11th player in Murray State History to have his Jersey retired this Saturday ( 2020 ).

Joe Fulks ( 1941-1943 )had his Jersey number ( #26 ) retired in 2001.
Garrett Beshear ( 1950-1953 ) had his Jersey number ( #16 ) retired in 1953.
Howie Crittenden ( 1952-1956 ) had his Jersey number ( #19 ) retired in 1956.

There was a different numbering system in place for these players at the time they played.

Arguably, there are a few more players that deserve to have their Jersey retired based on the numbers of the players that have already had their Jersey retired.

So we've averaged a retire-their-jersey player about every 6 years here at Murray State University!

Let that sink in for a minute.....

Since 1989, we've averaged a retire-their-jersey player about every 4 years!!

What a time to be a Racer fan!!!

There are only 35 jersey numbers left to retire and we need to keep 15 unretired for the current year's players, so that leaves only 20 jerseys left to retire before we run out of jerseys to retire.

If we keep up this pace of great players, by the year 2100 we will not have any numbers left!!

Something will have to be done moving forward.

I would propose allowing previously retired jersey numbers to be worn but with the stipulation that they would have to be on a black background with the retired player's name beneath the number in small enough font so as not to detract from the number.

All this with the understanding that only the original player's retired jersey will have a name and a number on it. All subsequent players can have a jersey with their name on it retired with the number in a noticeably smaller font.

I think this is a decent solution to the problem and still keeps the spirit retiring a jersey alive and yet allows other players with similar accomplishments to not be left out of the recognition process.

I'm sure there are other solutions though.

There are only 37 numbers, 01-05 are not legal numbers.

Actually 0 and 00 are considered different and legal NCAA uniform numbers, but a team can only have one or the other and not both.

Interesting article on the subject.

I had mixed emotions at first when this was announced. Similar to many of the comments in this thread but I’m starting to get pretty excited about Saturday night. I’m glad I finally have no other obligations for this one. We get more than our fair share of nights like this but they are still not all that common. It’s going to be a great night. I’ve heard there is a large group coming from Memphis. Wonder if any of his teammates will come to support him. I’m sure they are curious as to what Racer Nation is all about.

Does Zion have an outside shot at winning rookie of the year over Ja? Surely not.

If the Grizzlies make the playoffs I say there is no chance. I think the only thing that could give him a chance is if the Pelicans were to go on a run and overtake the Grizzlies in the standings. Then you have to consider the pre/post Zion Pelicans and his value would come into the equation. Fact of the matter is that Zion is unlikely to play every game moving forward with back to backs etc. Personally I have a hard time giving ROY to a player that plays 34 or 35 games and some of those being with limited minutes. HOWEVER, it is the NBA and they are really bad about giving awards based on media buzz and letting that sway decisions. That being said, the Grizzlies are a .500 team and in the playoffs right now and people were thinking they were going to get a top 5 draft pick again coming into the year, so I think it has to be Ja based on stats and his value to his team.

I think with the unexpected success of the grizzlies with Ja this year will be enough for him to win. The CJ actually has an article on this today.

These are the only legal numbers in NCAA basketball. It has to do with officials signaling who a foul is on, as you only have 5 digits per hand (usually lol): 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 00, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 40, 41, 42, 43, 44, 45, 50, 51, 52, 53, 54, and 55.

Less than 40 available numbers and we have retired several, 11 of 37 to be exact after Saturday night.
Not all of our retired numbers are even legal today. For example 16,19, &26.

I'll be very surprised if Ja isn't name ROY.

I'll be somewhat surprised if Zion makes it through the remainder of the season without another injury.

Good point about injury. After Zion's first or second game I saw a quick segment on SC or Get Up where they broke down the game in depth. One of the analysts pointed out that Zion has the tendency to land on one leg rather than two. He said typically that isn't much of an issue but with Zion's leaping ability that's 285 lbs coming down from roughly 4' in the air on one knee/ankle, often at an extreme angle. It's fine to do at times but leap after leap game after game will destroy those joints sooner rather than later.

I'm amazed Zion is in the Rising Stars game at the All Star weekend after playing in FOUR games this season. If the Grizz don't make the playoffs I wouldn't be surprised if Ja gets screwed out of the ROY award.

This is for football, not basketball, but interesting on how they are handling it. I thought it was interesting that recruits were brought up on here with them asking for numbers. What do you guys think about how they are handling It?
