Ja definitely deserves it. The best player to put on the blue and gold in my lifetime and by far the most nationally influential.

Not to completely derail the thread immediately, but will we circle back around and retire Cam's at some point?

One day we are gonna run out of legal numbers at the rate we retire them.

At some point you just hang jerseys and let the numbers be worn again right?

You’d think so. Off topic, but our overzealousness has resulted in one hanging up there that is just a head scratcher to me, especially considering there is a prior player who wore the same digits who is infinitely more deserving.

The decision to retire a number is a BIG TIME decision to be made by temporary university employees who have no long term history with the program and who may not even be here in 5 years, imho.

We can always go to 3 digit numbers...like 112. I might like that because that would really confuse the OVC refs on how to show the scoring table a 3 digit number with just two hands. You could say if might be a deterrent to calling fouls due to the complexity for them. LOL

These are the only legal numbers in NCAA basketball. It has to do with officials signaling who a foul is on, as you only have 5 digits per hand (usually lol): 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 00, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 40, 41, 42, 43, 44, 45, 50, 51, 52, 53, 54, and 55.

Less than 40 available numbers and we have retired several, 11 of 37 to be exact after Saturday night.

So the issue is that a big fuss is made over "no player shall ever wear this number again," yada, yada, yada. Then we keep retiring numbers until we either have to stop retiring numbers forever or go back on our solemn oath. You don't have to be a mathematician to see the problem. It's myopia.

Now that we have officially set aside the unwritten “you need to have graduated” rule, no player out there has as much claim to a retired number than Ike.

I don't disagree with retiring Ja's number, but why the rush?

Ask that another way-

If you agree that he is deserving, why wait?

Need a time when he can be here, and he is a focal point of the recent success of the program.

I agree that at some point we may have to use numbers that are retired. Since the name is prominently displayed, the player is still honored. Make it a length of time, like 60 years, and the player is no longer living, We still have several to go before that decision has to be made.

I appreciated the nice comment from Aubrey Reese, who was a great player in his own right, and gave us many thrilling moments. We have been fortunate to have a lot of great players over the history of the Murray State program. One other thing Murray State has always had is great fan support.

I believe the NCAA will allow 6-9 on jerseys before long. It's worked well enough in the NBA and FIBA.

Good, he deserves it.

Also, I’m with Casey and have been lobbying for Ike for about a decade now. 4x OVC Champ, 4x All conference, 2nd all time points, 5th all time rebounds, 12th all time assists.

I'm wondering if it had anything to do with Kobe. Why wait when he is deserving now because you never know what tomorrow will bring.

My overall feeling towards any jersey retirement is that there should be a 5 year minimum from the time the player played and when they are eligible for jersey retirement. Time is a good equalizer of how we remember someone. I agree Ja's number should be retired, but I'm more concerned with the precedent that it sets. If we're retiring 2 year players now, then where does Cam fit into all of this? I just don't think a jersey retirement is a thing to be rushed less than a year after they've been gone. I could probably be persuaded either way, but it's just my opinion. I'm happy for Ja and I'll be proud to see his jersey go up on Saturday night regardless.

I don't necessarily disagree with you. It was just my thought on why it might have come about especially so soon without much notice.

Sure, it’s unprecedented, but so is Ja Morant.
