I’m hearing Whitley is dealing with a nagging stress fracture that won’t heal. Not good.

Yea I think this season was going to be tough for him even before the foot injury. He probably needs 4 or 5 months of rehab and conditioning.

Two medical redshirts for the 2019-2020 season.

Cowart and Whitley. Mark it down.
I really hope not, i'd rather take what we have coming and develop it.

Why would you not want a player like (healthy) Nell to come back?

That would put us 3 scholarships over the limit for next season. I'd be surprised if that happens. I could see one of them getting a medical redshirt, but both would be a long shot.

He was a great player last year but injuries change a player's mindset and when he did play this year, albeit only a few games before he got another injury, he was a liability on defense and had no finesse on offense which with him not having any elevation in his jump, finesse is all he has to score with.

I don’t believe them both taking a medical redshirt would put us three over next year, only two. Whitley isn’t a senior this year so regardless of if this year comes off his eligibility or not, he is on the books for next year.

I swim regularly, and he's been doing some pretty intense workouts in the pool under the guidance of one of the assistant coaches.

I just wonder how good Tevin could be with Cowart?

Tevin has had a huge jump in production and his 3pt shooting is ace, but more blocking out with Cowart when driving the lane could help his FG%.

I think it is worth him coming back just to see how it elevates Brown's game for a late season push and maybe help his draft stock too.

Cowart is also an underrated passer out of the post, especially when he sees double teams

Just my :twocents: but I think you're reading too much into not much game time when he clearly wasn't fully recovered (wearing a brace) and not in shape. The way his body is I think it was unrealistic to expect him to play up to his potential or play his way into shape this season off of that injury. I think with an off season to get back in shape and work on his game a little he could be first team OVC next season. The risk seems worth the reward if we get that.

Absolutely and it's not just passing out of the double team, but forcing that double to come to create holes in the other team's defense. I think there's a good chance that he would have been the best passer and creator on the team this season.

A big guy this quick and has excellent offensive moves in the paint is very rare for MSU. He was one of our most effective offensive players last year, besides Ja. We need this big bruiser back and healthy.

Especially when you have someone like KJ or Demond, who do really well crashing the rim, where a gifted post passer can hit them for dunks.

Weird thing about spacing in basketball is that's easy to see the spacing between the front court and the backcourt. Good shooters draw their defenders out, great posts draw their defenders in. But what really gets interesting is when you find good spacing among posts or perimeter players. When the ball is on the block extended, or at the elbow, great passers can use the space there to open up easier shots for their teammates. Its amazing how that works, but it does.

Whitley wouldn't be a medical as he hasn't played. If a player doesn't play in a season it doesn't cost them a year of eligibility. Matt Smith and Brion Whitley if they never see the floor during a game will be automatic red-shirts provided they are still fine academically.
