Gulf Coast Showdown - Weber State

Post by wkeown » Tue Nov 26, 2019 2:31 pm

Whew..... pulled that one out of the fire. Congrats to KJ Williams for playing outstanding today. That may have been his best game so far. He was a presence! Those were all earned points - not junk.

This tournament reminds me of the Nashville thanksgiving tourney a few years ago. Lots of growing pains, but the talent is there.

We gave up 11 of 22 deep balls, wow. From one of the best 3-pt defenses in the country to this so far is a big old key. Committing 19 turnovers to 13 assists not gonna win you many.

PG situation is much different though.

Still say Tev is the best we got as of now for PG.

I have not been feeling great about DaQuan yet. Except for a few early minutes in the Tennessee game he has seemed lost. And I guess I was expecting a bit more considering he is the one point guard that has already practiced and sat with coach watching and studying the system for a year already. But I know it’s still early.

true, but the demands that this team puts on the PG is different as well.

The problem is, he's also the best we've got as a shooter, and a defender. A player can effectively be any two of those three but it's damn tough to do all three.

I think he's trying too hard instead of playing within himself and letting it come to him. He spent a year on the bench, chomping at the bit, watching Ja's wizardry and now he's got the pressure of two new PG's behind him. Watching him at times reminds me of my ten year old self trying to be MJ on the playground.

I agree fully but right now which 2 is the most important.

I missed the game, so somebody tell me the story on Cowart and his minutes/shots for this game. No foul trouble. Was he hurt?

Watching Tevin, he really is talented. Yet when I see him, I don’t think “slasher”, or “point guard”. I see a near elite 2 guard that has under-the-radar PG skills. What he is trying to Do by going to the basket is phenomenal, and selfless, yet I just don’t see that as part of his strength. When he goes to the basket, it’s pretty much 50/50 between 2 points and a turnover and it is gonna wear him down sooner than later. I would rather him work the perimeter and stay back on defense than to drive to the hoop. That is what Chico and DaQuan need to do.

It can't be a shock. The loss of Shaq and the push for our second best defender to pick up the slack on offense was bound to hurt our perimeter defense.

It was actually a fun game to watch. We blew a huge lead, but held tough down the stretch when we needed to. Kudos to Tevin, making a pressure shot then converting a one and one for the game winner. Great teaching game for Coach Mac. Glad they went there to gain experience. They clearly need it.

I listened online to the broadcast - he went down and banged his knee - coach said in the post game show he didn't do any damage but the knee was sore from the brace hitting the floor and his leg when he went down. Doesn't sound serious thankfully. He went back in for a possession or two after that but they took him out and he didn't play again.

After looking at Weber state’s schedule, that would have been a very bad loss.

La Salle is better than people thought it appears. I know our defense needs work. But, even good 3 point shooters that are wide open will miss 5 of 10 on average. We just played 2 teams that were red hot from deep.

We may never have another game going 4 of 20 from deep like we did last night. We were ice cold last night from deep. La Salle was red hot. Over the course of 40 minutes, if we had made 2 more 3’s last night, and , La Salle had made 2 fewer, that would have been a different game at the end.

Lots of work to do. I just hope we figure out how to shut down the 3 before we play Belmont.
