Scheduling changes

Post by 02Racer » Wed Jun 05, 2019 8:05 am

Yesterday the OVC voted in a requirement that basketball games must start before 4pm local time if the visiting team has more than s 3.5 hour drive home. For us that means that both home and road contests with JSU, EIU, SIUE, EKU and head will now be daytime games when they fall on Saturdays.

Thoughts?

Sounds like a rule a high school conference would make.

I wondered if exceptions were made for possible nationally televised games or if its just “No thanks, ESPN, that’s past our bedtime.”

It appears it’s for men only and the coaches asked for this.

02 hit the nail on the head. Purposefully keeping ANY of your conference games from having any shot at getting on Saturday prime time is (de)Bush league.

I'm curious to see if it will have any effect on attendance for those games.

I don’t think they do it, and it might be bad for relationships between conference schools, but it would be interesting if they released which schools voted which way on stuff like this.

The only prime time games the OVC would remotely have a chance of being on a Saturday night are Murray and Belmont, Murray and APSU, or APSU and Belmont....the new schedule won't hinder those matchups. A good afternoon match-up makes it easier for out-of-towners to attend.

I like being out of the arena by 6:30 pm on a Saturday night or not being tied to espn+ all night on the weekend.

Does this rule only apply to weekend games or also on weekdays?

Agreed that it won't effect our marquee matchups so it's no biggie really.

Also saw that our golly gee commish got a contract extension through 25-26 I believe it was. Oh goody.

That's part of the problem - when half of the OVC programs only draw 700 fans to a game and the attendance drops by 10% for an afternoon game - that's only 70 less tickets sold. When our ticket sales go down 10%, that's 400 less tickets.

Realistically this is only going to affect 2 or 3 home games per year for us. Some of those home matchups against the programs beyond the driving radius will be on weeknights. Some seasons we won't play a second game against 1 or 2 of those programs that used to be in the Eastern half of the OVC. A little variety might not be bad - I'm keeping an open mind. As long as the Tap has the beer cold and the pizza and wings hot for lunch, we're good to go.

This is the OVC so nothing is a surprise, maybe her contract extension is.

I wish instead of this change that they had made the women's games start at 4:30 during the week so that the men's games actually start on time.

Women's games start early enough. There are two solutions. The first is to have the games on differing dates. The second would be to have the officials call the games more like the SEC, ACC, or Big 10 by rewarding a good defensive effort by eliminating the cheap fouls and speeding up the game by having fewer trips to the free throw line.

The easiest and most obvious solution would be to simply change the listed start time for the men’s games to 7:30 for doubleheaders.

It's like torture when it's an away game and you pull up ESPN+ and it says "Event about to begin" across the screen for about 35 minutes until the men's game begins. Changing the start of the women's game is a no brianer. Then again, I'm not sure the OVC brass could put together a two piece puzzle.

The trips to the free throw line aren't the problem. It's the 10 minute trips to the video replay to figure out if the call was correct or not and the post conference to discuss and decide.

While delays to inspect video are a pain, the results of those inspections are making for better called games. And speaking of better called games, last season appeared to have far less fouls called and far less ridiculous calls. I have no stats on hand to back that up, but I saw lots of first halves this year where nether team got to the bonus. There even seemed to be less people in the stands making an ass of themselves due to bad calls. I don't have any stats on that either.
