No April Fools joke. Sweater vest retired. I’ll always appreciate him for forcing us to become a better program. We had to invest more money and resources to keep up with and pass him. Great man.

I will say that he's leaving a pretty good lineup for the next coach. As much as I can't stand sweater vest, he's a hell of a coach. Happy retirement. Curious who's going into that coaching position.

This is a major event. Byrd IS Belmont basketball. You will also see the level of importance the administration puts upon progressing the program. Byrd is the highest paid coach in the OVC, and if they are serious about keeping their program moving forward, look for them to go after Lipscomb's coach (Alexander?) who is a former assistant at Belmont.

I'm curious how their current players will fit into a completely new system. Then again, we may be in the same position next season too.

He's a few steps down the depth chart.

I'll be surprised if Ayers doesn't get the job.

I don't take any joy in this announcement. Byrd was a hall of fame type coach. However, young players prefer to play for young coaches. This may turn out to make Belmont even better than ever.

I'm honestly waiting for him to say April Fools at this press conference.

One of the top "X and O" guys in the country. Seems to be a class guy as well - his players were well behaved on and off the court. It will be interesting to see how Belmont responds to this challenge. This is a position they haven't been in FOR OVER 30 YEARS! In this day and age that's really, really hard to imagine.

He is a first-class coach running a first-class program! I wish him nothing but the best in his retirement I'd like to thank him for what he has contributed to the conference as a whole.

It is probably Ayer's job, but wondering if there could be some Belmont Blvd drama with Alexander coming back over from Lipscomb.

Or it could mean we all get what we want... Byrd was a huge voice of opposition to the MVC move. With him gone they may explore the move and Murray State finally has its dance partner. I hope so!

Now tell me...…..when was the last time the MVC received multiple bids to the dance? They may be higher ranked as a conference, but they get no respect for their conference schedule from the committee. Out of conference is what got the bid for Belmont.

The MVC will see a multiple bid long before the OVC receives another one. This year was a positive, but huge fluke for the OVC.

Rick Byrd didn't recruit the top guys, Rick recruited his system and got guys to buy in...

That program is all about his coaching. They won't get better than Byrd. They'll still be good...but Rick is the man.
