Tip off

Post by Kentucky Lake » Sat Feb 09, 2019 7:14 pm

Its 7:10 and the womens game has not finished. This means the men's game will start at 7:40 instead of the advertised 7pm tip.

These 5/7 doubleheaders need to be looked at again. Lots of problems with this setup.

Everybody knows that there's no way the men's game will start at 7, but if they advertise 7:30 and a game starts at 7:29, somebody's going to scream bloody murder about missing the tip off. (Maybe they could say 5/7:15?)

7 would probably ok if they didn't have a monitor review every 4 trips down the floor.

Honestly, Saturday late tips aren't an issue, but these Thur night 7:30 or later is a killer for us. Having a 2yr and 4yr old up that late is a struggle on a weeknight.

It's been this way for over a decade.

I thought it had only been this way for about 3 years? I know we used to have an occasional double header, but I don't remember it being every single conference game. I hate it. It's one is the most OVC things we do. I don't think it's fair to the women either, who have to play at terrible times. 5 o'clock is a push for most people to get off work and make it to the arena. And what was the deal with that afternoon start time at Jax St last week? If the OVC is trying to save money why don't we just load up all of the "girls" and "boys" on yellow school buses and travel together to the games? Maybe even throw the principal on there too.

I think it's the norm for mens' and womens' teams to travel on the same bus on conference road trips. I don't know that for a fact, but am assuming it is the way it's done. That may not happen for games "next door" like Martin and Clarksville, but it's a pretty good stack of bills to take two buses on long trips.

I figured they would travel separately.

Yeah, if they're on the same bus, that's something new. Pretty sure it's separate transportation.

A few years ago the OVC geniuses decided to experiment with changing up the double header schedule. They wanted the women to have their "own night" instead of always preceding the men's games. That season there were only a handful of double headers and the rest of the time the women played on Sundays, Tuesday's, Fridays etc.

Predictably, expenses for the universities went up and attendence for the women's games hit an all time low. You think it's difficult to get people to show up early for a 5:00pm women's game, try getting them to come two more nights a week.

At least for the double headers, the women will get a decent crowd for at least the second half. When the OVC gave them their "own night" they were playing to empty stands.

Anybody remember the season the OVC started the men’s games first, followed by the women’s? As soon as the men’s game ended the fans were pouring out as the women were taking the floor to warm up so that little experiment with “fair” failed miserably. Or did I dream all of that?

Doubleheaders are great if they are 4:45 and 7:15 on Thursdays.

From what I remember, it had to do with how the tip off times were scheduled when we had earlier (in the day) TV games than the traditional night games. Could be wrong but that's what I'm remembering.

Nah what I’m recalling was for “fairness” and it started around the same time as the OVC’s policy on sportsmanship started being read prior to games, had nothing to do with TV. We were hardly ever on TV, but again, I could be dreaming lol.
