Tech one win from super regional

Post by runningracer » Mon Jun 04, 2018 5:16 pm

Tech beat Mississippi 15-5 this afternoon, forcing a one game playoff to determine who goes to the super regional tonight. I believe this is as far as the OVC has ever got. Murray had a good run a long time ago to get close to this point, I think, but maybe I am mistaken. It was thirty or more years ago, so time may have dulled my memory.

Murray State got that far in the mid-1970s, 1975 I think.

The regional was played in Starkville, and Murray had to win only one of two against host Mississippi State to advance to the College World Series. As I recall, some borderline calls went Mississippi State's way (shocking, I know) in those games and the Bulldogs won both and advanced.

This Tech team is probably the best the OVC has produced since those Murray State teams under Johnny Reagan, as both were in the national rankings.

In 1979 Murray State was the number one seed and the NCAA allowed number 2 seed Mississippi state to host. Murray needed one win but Mississippi State got them twice.

Right, 1979, not 1975. And I remember us getting hosed in those last two games.

It would take a lot of hosing to get hosed in an 18-8 ballgame

I think it was the 8-6 game. I believe it carried over to the last game. Similar to Game 7 of the 1985 World Series after the Denkinger game.

First, congratulations to Tennessee Tech. They have made OVC baseball proud and I am pulling for them to make it to the CWS. However, I think a case could be made that their achievement as of now is no greater than the 79 'Breds team. At present they are two wins away from the CWS. The 79 Murray team was only one win away from the CWS.

Yes the format was different in 79 as there were only 34 teams in the field but my argument is that those were the best 34 teams in the country. That said, I hope that Tech wins two more and becomes the first OVC baseball team to make it to the CWS. I think that if you look at what Tech has done, the number of OVC players picked in the draft, and a number of good wins over power conference teams by OVC teams, the OVC is becoming a baseball conference not to be taken lightly.

Hopefully, Murray can become part of that conversation. I strongly believe we were headed in that direction and I hope the coaching change does not cause us to lose the momentum that we have built up over the past four years. As for none of our players being drafted, we would have had one, Davis Sims, but he indicated that he planned to return next year so MLB teams backed off. And with the success of Grant Wood, we now have three freshmen all-Americans on the team moving into next year.

Beating the number four team in the nation twice is quite impressive. One those wins being 15-5.
